Spring is the perfect time to shake off the winter blues, step outside, and embrace all that our local communities have to offer. For many, retirement is a chance to enjoy newfound freedom, explore new interests, and form meaningful connections.
Adlington Retirement Living communities are thriving social hubs, designed to help people stay independent, active, and engaged with the wider world. With carefully chosen locations close to town centres, public transport, and local amenities, they provide the perfect base for homeowners to enjoy life to the fullest.
A Warm Welcome: Sue’s Story
Sue moved to The Woodlands in Heaton Mersey, Stockport, in 2022 and was surprised by how quickly she settled in.
“My decision to move here was mainly because I wanted to be closer to my family. That was the most important thing. But what I hadn’t anticipated was the incredible community of friends I would make here – something that has proved to be just as valuable. Within two days of moving in, I couldn’t imagine living anywhere else.”
Sue soon found herself exploring her surroundings with her new friends.
“We go down to the river, into town, and to the theatre. One of my favourite spots is the Cheadle Bridge, where I often see dippers and sand martins nesting along the riverbank. I take my bird book, binoculars, and a drink of water, and I always end up chatting with friendly people along the way.”
The sense of freedom and security that The Woodlands provides has made a significant difference in Sue’s life.
“Living somewhere like this gives you the opportunity to be yourself in a safe environment while maintaining your independence. You’ve got the scope to do whatever you want to.”
Staying Active and Engaged: Lesley’s Experience
Lesley moved to The Newells in Kempston, Bedfordshire, in 2023, drawn by the opportunity to maintain her independent lifestyle with the added reassurance of support when needed.
“I’ve made good friends with the other homeowners here. We talk all the time and we laugh a lot.
“I’ve always loved the theatre, and now I go even more. There’s a fantastic community theatre which puts on great productions.”
Lesley believes that staying mentally and socially engaged is key to a happy retirement.
“That’s the secret – keeping your brain active and staying interested in things.”
Lesley is an active member of the University of the Third Age (U3A), which has over 1,000 members in her area.
“It was the first thing I joined when I retired. I’ve been treasurer for six years and have just handed the role over to another volunteer. U3A keeps the brain going. I’m part of the local history and arts groups. There’s so much to do.”
A New Lease on Life: Trevor’s Perspective
Since moving to The Sidings in Lytham, Lancashire, Trevor has experienced a complete transformation.
“I’m more socially active now than I’ve been for years. Before moving, I’d become completely isolated – an old curmudgeon! But within a few weeks, my sister and daughter both noticed the difference in me. They said, ‘You’re a totally different person.’”
Trevor, a lifelong lover of the arts, has rekindled his passion for theatre and opera.
“I used to be deeply involved in amateur dramatics with the Lancastrian Players, directing and acting in many productions. Now, I go to see the occasional opera – I’ve always been a huge opera fan since I was a teenager. Recently, I went to the Grand in Blackpool.”
Beyond the arts, Trevor enjoys staying active.
“One of the biggest benefits of moving to a retirement community is the stimulation of being around others. Physically, it helps too. I like to walk around Lytham, but on days when I can’t, I do two laps of The Sidings in the morning and two in the afternoon.”
The Joy of Pet-Friendly Living: Pam and Mike’s Story
For Pam and Mike, finding a retirement community that welcomed pets was a top priority.
“Pets are part of the family, and we knew we couldn’t move anywhere that wouldn’t accept our dog, Honey,” Pam said. “Since moving to The Woodlands, we’ve met so many people through dog walking. It’s a great way to stay fit and socialise.
“There are three or four lovely parks near here. We like Fog Lane Park because it’s so big, and there’s a dog-friendly café where we can get coffee and biscuits. Sometimes, we take the tram to Didsbury Park – it’s only a five-minute ride. We often bump into other dog owners and have a chat.”
