Widows and widowers across the UK are swiping right on a fresh start this month, with January emerging as the most popular time of year for taking the first brave steps back into the world of dating.

Research by Chapter 2 Dating, the UK’s only dating app exclusively for widows and widowers, has revealed that 20% more widows sign up in January than in December, with sign-ups in the first month of the year beating every other month.

Widow and relationship expert Nicky Wake, founder of Chapter 2 Dating, said: “Widowhood is a reality for over three million people in the UK, with more than 100,000 under the age of 51. For many, the New Year represents hope and new beginnings, making it a natural time to rediscover love after loss.

“The New Year inspires widows to think about what the next chapter of their life might look like. After experiencing loss, many find January to be a time to take a deep breath and open their hearts to the idea of love and connection again.”

Chapter 2’s research also found that widows and widowers wait an average of two years and seven months before re-entering the dating world. When asked about their reasons for dating again, women most commonly said they wanted “someone to share their life with” (32%), while men cited “companionship” (35%) as their top motivation.
